![]() ![]() A park ranger told us that this is the best spot to explore the Everglades by kayak. This part of the park was hit hard by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and was not open during our visit. The Gulf Coast Visitor Center is located on the western side of the Everglades, at Everglades City, just south of Naples. Shark Valley (the blue points on this map), which sits due west of Miami, is the place to go on airboat rides and take a tour by tram or bicycle to see the wildlife. Highway 9336 links these two visitor centers with short walks, viewpoints, hiking trails, and opportunities to go kayaking. Coe Visitor Center and the Flamingo Visitor Center, is one of the most popular spots for visitors. The southernmost section (the orange points on the map), which includes the Ernest F. In the 1900’s, canals were built, diverting water from Lake Okeechobee to cities and residential areas, and this has dramatically altered the ecosystem of the Everglades. For hundreds of years, humans have been encroaching on the Everglades. The Everglades is an enormous wetland that is fed by water from Lake Okeechobee. This fragile ecosystem is listed as a World Heritage Site and it is an International Biosphere Reserve. The park is home to manatees, American crocodiles, a huge number of birds, and even panthers. It was okay, no need to go back though.Everglades National Park is the third largest park in the lower 48 states, after Death Valley and Yellowstone. The park itself is very nice, I enjoyed the fact they let people interact with alligators so people can see they are not aggressive animals. You always see those crazy fan boats on TV, well this was very tame. We saw close to fifteen before we even left the park, I couldn't believe we just didn't see any gators in the wild! We were so disappointed the boat didn't go fast. We saw while out on the airboat (which seemed rather short) we saw only about 3 alligators. We were so excited to go on a fast airboat ride, and see a lot of gators. Safari Park was just on the side of the road, and it was really nice, very big. The Everglades are nothing like NOLA I realized. I have never been to the Everglades, the only thing I had been to that I thought would be similar is New Orleans. It was about an hour drive from the port, maybe even 45 minutes. It was included in the airport transfer, so we got to get off the ship super early, and go to The Everglades. We booked it through Carnival, on our last day at the Port of Miami. ![]()
